Our expert advisors set off on a one-of-a-kind week-long journey through Japan hosted by Discova.
In September, five of our expert Travel Associates advisors embarked on an unforgettable journey through Japan, curated in partnership with Discova, specialists in immersive, locally guided travel. Over seven exquisite nights, this bespoke itinerary revealed Japan at its most inspiring: a harmonious fusion of culture, cuisine, and calm, crafted for curious travellers seeking authentic, meaningful experiences.
And that’s exactly what this journey delivered. With every detail thoughtfully arranged, our advisors delved into the depth and nuance of Japanese tradition, all while enjoying the seamless logistics and luxury touches that define a Travel Associates experience.
Read on to discover the highlights and unexpected moments that made this a truly tailor-made adventure.
A Seamless Take-Off to Japan
Our advisors travelled with Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines from Australia (depending on their departure city), with many enjoying connecting flights in Kuala Lumpur. With minimal layovers, excellent in-flight entertainment and signature hospitality, the journey set the tone for what was to come.
Tokyo: Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow

Our advisors visited the serene Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa, Tokyo.
“Arriving in Tokyo felt like the start of something exciting”, shares Tara Roberts from Houston & Turner Travel Associates. “It’s a feast for the senses – like stepping into a futuristic wonderland with deep cultural roots.”
The group stayed at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu, a quiet sanctuary above the city with metro access at its base. “The rooms were absolutely stunning, with a bath overlooking the city skyline”, says Tammy Houston, Business Leader at Houston & Turner Travel Associates.
From the neon mayhem of Shibuya Crossing to the peaceful grounds of Meiji Shrine, Tokyo unveiled its many faces.
“Each district was so diverse with something different to offer. From temples to forest and nature in the centre of the city, funky areas full of cool bars and eateries like Ebisu and the mayhem of Shinjuku and Shibuya with their bright lights and incredible shopping opportunities, there was something for everyone!”, adds Tammy.

The group explored the bright lights of Shinjuku and the surrounding areas on a night tour.
One of the standout experiences was a Kintsugi workshop in Aoyama, where guests discovered the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. “We learned about wabi-sabi which translates to beauty in imperfection”, explains Justine Pielli from Travel Associates Belconnen. “Taking a discarded plate and giving it new life with gold lacquer was deeply meaningful, and meditative.”
That afternoon, a pop culture walking tour took the group through Harajuku and Shibuya. Hidden eateries, quirky boutiques, and fashion-forward streets gave our advisors a behind-the-scenes look at Tokyo’s trendiest corners. Tara shares one of the area’s best-kept secrets: I had the best katsu chicken curry of my life in a tiny Harajuku restaurant – and for just $12!”
Dinner at Kinka Izakaya was lively and delicious, capping off the busy day. The team enjoyed free-flow drinks paired with multiple courses of amazing food, including steaming hot pots and a sizzling plate of wagyu beef.

Sumo, Shrines & Street Life
The following day began in Asakusa, home to Senso-ji Temple and lively Nakamise Street. As Asakusa is such a busy area, our advisors suggest heading straight to the viewing deck at the Asakusa Tourist Information Centre for a peaceful vantage point away from the crowds. Another tip – aim to visit in low season if possible. “Still”, shares Justine, “the architecture of the shrine is absolutely beautiful. The colours and the artwork are something to be seen.”

But it was the Sumo experience that stole the show. “The wrestlers were retired pros and incredibly entertaining,” says Tammy. “We learned their techniques, asked questions, then had a go at sumo wrestling ourselves, which was like trying to move a tree!” The hearty chanko nabe lunch that followed was both delicious and authentic (a dish traditionally eaten by wrestlers in training).
Kanazawa: Culture, Calm & Candlelight
A scenic Shinkansen ride brought the group to Kanazawa, a city of geisha traditions, samurai heritage, and elegant gardens. “The bullet train was sleek, fast, and incredibly punctual,” says Tara. Her must-do recommendation? “Grab a bento box and coffee before boarding – it’s all part of the fun!”

Our advisors experienced the speed, luxury and comfort of riding the Shinkansen in Gran Class.
Staying at the well-located ANA Crowne Plaza, the group explored Kenrokuen Garden, a poetic landscape of koi ponds, stone bridges, and seasonal blooms. Our advsiors described it as one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, with every turn revealing something new.
That evening, the group had the rare privilege of enjoying a private Geisha dinner in an enchanting Geisha district, characterised by narrow lanes, wooden teahouses, and a sense of mystery. “It was our most memorable night in Japan,” says Tammy. “We were lucky enough to be hosted by Nozomi, the former interpreter to the Empress of Japan whose energy was contagious! The Geishas were cheeky, fun and incredibly talented entertainers who transported us to another world with their musical renditions."
Rural Charms & Storybook Villages

A trip into the mountains revealed a hidden side of Japan, where traditional farmhouses date back 250 years.
A day trip to Gokayama and Shirakawago revealed another side of Japan marked by rural life and centuries-old traditions. “These villages were like stepping into a fairytale”, shares Tara. “Thatched-roof houses, mountain scenery, and a deep sense of heritage. It was peaceful and extremely photogenic.” Tina Millington from Langhorne & James Travel Associates adds, "Getting to see the rural parts of Japan was one of my highlights of the trip - I loved seeing the beautiful countryside and these incredible houses in the gassho-zukuri style with thatched roofs that reminded me of gingerbread houses."
Kyoto: Timeless Beauty and Spiritual Spaces
In Kyoto, the advisors checked into Hotel Okura, a classically elegant property perfectly located for exploring. From Pontocho Alley’s glowing lanterns to the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto unfolded like a dream.
“Walking through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was surreal,” says Tara. “The towering stalks, the filtered light, it was magical!”

For Tammy, a quiet moment at Daikaku-ji Temple stood out. “We had it all to ourselves as it was a little off the beaten path – and we even got to observe a bride and groom dressed in full traditional attire. It was so serene with the sounds of monks praying and in ceremony.”
